There's no denying that Microsoft desperately needs to revamp its mobile operating system, but the effect of this isn't all bad. Its inertia has forced handset manufacturers to take the lead and as a result we've seen a constant stream of hardware innovations over the past two years or so: GPS, HSDPA, touch-sensitive and high-resolution screens are commonplace now, and bundled software extras are also an area where manufacturers seek to stand out.
With i-mate's latest business email companion - the Ultimate 8150 - the innovation is somewhat more unusual. On the outside it looks pretty standard stuff - but on the right side is an unusual socket that hints at something slightly different. This smartphone can be hooked up to an external monitor. The ability comes courtesy of nVidia's GoForce 5500 graphics chip, which allows output of resolutions up to 1024 x 768 and it works rather splendidly. Using a special cable supplied in the box, which also carries audio, you simply hook the 8150 up to a spare D-SUB socket on your monitor and then switch between external and built in screens as you would on a full blown notebook. Cunningly, once you switch to the external output the touch screen on the 8150 turns into a touchpad and you use it to control a cursor on screen in much the same way as you would on a notebook.
The target audience of such a feature is, of course, the mobile presenter - it offers the opportunity to travel light and yet still be able to display basic slideshows. But contractors could also find a use for it. While you're out on-site, with the addition of a Bluetooth fold away keyboard, it turns any spare monitor into a mini workstation. In fact, just to prove a point, I wrote the entirety of this review on the 8150 hooked up in just this way.

Whilst design is a very personal thing, evaluating the functions of the handset is more objective, and that is what we are trying to do today.

The Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition is a minor update of the 8800 released a year ago. Apart from the camera, there has not been much else updated hardware-wise. The phonecan be recognized from afar by the reflection of its stainless steel body. According to Nokia, the signature feature of the 8800 Sirocco Edition's design is the concave 'thumbprint' on the front of the handset. Not only does it look nice, but it also makes the phone a lot more ergonomic, as it is now easier to slide open. The body measures 107mm x 45mm x 17.5mm (4.21" x 1.77" x 0.69"), making it fairly compact. The 8800 Sirocco Edition weights in at 138g (4.87oz), making the handset disproportionately heavy for its size.
Ofcourse, some people like it heavy, saying that the handset feels solid and high-end to justify its price. Although the mirror surface is a fingerprint magnet, it is extremely scratch resistant compared to the Sony Ericsson Z610i. Nokia stressed that the glass in front of the screen is specially treated to withstand scratches.

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) Ltd. on Wednesday unveiled its first ever flip smart phone, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220.
The first flip form factor BlackBerry comes at a time when RIM is tweaking its traditionally business-only devices and continuing on its path of targeting consumers and corporate users alike by adding a host of multimedia capabilities. Adding a flip phone to its portfolio taps a new user base: flip phone fans that didn't bite at the original Pearl's candy-bar design.
Research In Motion that facing mounting competition from Apple Inc.'s iPhone, is trying to extend its success beyond business users with its first flip model. Consumers accounted for about 60 percent of new subscribers in the first quarter and now make up more than 40 percent of customers. About 75 percent of mobile phones sold in the United States are the flip kind, Balsillie said.
"The most common preference is the flip and yet it's the most unaddressed because it requires some special innovation," Balsillie said. The company created a special hinge for the Pearl that gives more room for the keyboard and trackball. The Pearl Flip will be available in the United States from Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile unit.
It sports a 240x320 display, only now it folds out. The keypad still uses BlackBerry's Suretype system, which places two letters per key. But the buttons are more spacious and feel easier to use than those on earlier Pearls.
The nicest touches is that the external screen displays incoming e-mails with a brief snippet of the message so you don't have to open the phone to know what the e-mail is about. The front of the phone is jet black and looks like it will attract its fair share of fingerprints.
Moreover the quad-band phone (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; GPRS/EDGE) is set to be released through T-Mobile, though price and availability have not been set yet.
Some wonder if BlackBerry is taking a risk with this design. A lot of Pearl customers are new to RIM anyway, so they're not wedded to any design. So you give them a different design but keep the same BlackBerry experience. It provides that much more choice, and that should continue RIM's success story as it reaches out to more consumers.
Additionally, the RIM has finally got a flip phone to market, phone fashion has again moved on, with slider-phones (where the keyboard retracts) and all-screen models like the iPhone setting the trends.
A second new model, the BlackBerry Bold, maintains the brand’s traditional candy bar form factor, and does support 3G – in fact the pumped up HSDPA (aka 3G Broadband) iteration.
And where the Pearl Flip has a narrow keypad, the wide-bodied Bold sports a full QWERTY keyboard. The Bold also adds GPS support and, like the Flip, wi-fi.
Regardless of snipes against the Pearl Flip, the Canadian-based RIM steamrolls on. One in 10 phones sold in the US is now a BlackBerry, RIM says, with 5.6 million new subscribers added in the last quarter according to Gartner figures.
The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 is expected to be available from several global carriers in the fall. It will first be available through T-Mobile in the U.S. Pricing has yet to be announced.
iPhone Update 2.1 Available, Fixes All Problems…They Promise
The latest firmware update has recently been released onto iTunes, and has been proclaimed as definitely, definitely fixing all the issues experienced since the maligned 2.0 update. It does need the spanking new iTunes 8 to get going, which is a nice gentle way to force everyone to upgrade.

Meanwhile, some of the other "great new performance enhancements" that Jobs alluded to, but did not describe, are being discovered by first-generation iPod touch owners who've just installed iPod touch 2.1, which will be very similar to Friday's free iPhone Software 2.1 update.
One AppleInsider forum member remarked that he was "blown away" by the speed at which App Store applications are able to update themselves after applying the 2.1 update. The process seemed to have sped up fivefold, he said. What's more, icons of updated applications now retain their pre-set position on the Touch's home screen, rather than being thrust to the end of the home screen, where they previously needed to be forcibly repositioned by the user.
Another forum member notes that a second line of information, containing artist and album info, is visible when viewing songs. The responsiveness of the iPod application has also seen improvements, and a longer scrub bar makes it easier to scan through songs, he said. The app's 'shuffle' and 'continuous play' buttons have also been repositioned.

Air Sharing is one of the good ones. More straight forward than DataCase and more importantly much more free, Air Sharing allows the easy transfer and viewing of documents on the go.
A simple interface (complete with step-by-step walkthrough) provides connection help, and in less than two minutes we were pinging files between our iPhone and the Mac over the ofice wi-fi!
Not only that, but the wealth of supported formats means that pretty much anything that you need becomes portable on the usually difficult iPhone with the minimum of hassle…including audio and supported format movies.

The latest brainchild of Sims creator Will Wright is said to be making it’s way onto mobile gaming’s new home on Sunday, according to a Pocket Gamer report.
Simulating the evolution of an entire universe seems like a slightly…broad topic for a video game, but the critically acclaimed designer has managed to condense it all into a title for home computers as well as the iPhone. Unfortunately, the civilisation building and interplanetary warfare aspects will be restricted to the PC and Mac versions, whilst the iPhone version concentrates upon the initial ‘cellular growth’ phase of the game. Hence the name, ‘Spore Origins’.
The game is still very impressive for a mobile phone title, and speaking at a London launch event Wright urged fans to focus on the positive points of this title: “It’s got beautiful graphics, good music and it uses the tilting controls. But we may take other aspects of Spore and bring them to the iPhone later.”
Sweet words to placate fans of mobile gaming, or an admission of more Spore content on its way to the iPhone? Well, it’s far more likely to be success in terms of sales more than anything else which determines sequels, so we’ll enjoy the first one for now…

The iPhone 3G has been unveiled on O2’s website at a prepay price point of £349.99, with a September 16th launch date.
This price has been set for the 8GB model, with the 16GB going for £399.99. This includes 12 months of free unlimited Wi-Fi and browsing, after which it becomes an option for £10 per month.
With 16GB iPhones changing hands for over £500 on eBay, O2’s prices may seem pricey but are well under what people are entirely willing to pay. O2 is said to be hoping for a strong Christmas presence, and they hope iPhone 3G’s new prepay strategy will be a major contributing factor to this.
Bear in mind, however, that these phones are still to be tethered to O2 SIM cards, not entirely unlocked handsets. With no software only solution to the unlocking of the iPhone 3G, those box-breakers looking to sell the phone overseas may have to keep waiting…
With the new range of iPods rumoured to be breaking cover any time from now, a £350 price tag could be far more appealing than one might imagine. With the 16GB iPod Touch selling for around £250, why not pay that extra bit more for all that added functionality?
With ample stock in their retail stores, activation issues a distant memory and a new prong of attack on consumer wallets, the iPhone 3G seems to have turned a corner and is set to be a great success story for O2.
Obviously the fabled iPhone copy and paste function is not courtesy of Apple, for whom it is deemed far down the list of priorities with MMS and not crashing every three minutes (damn your eyes, firmware 2.0!). It is rather the product of a lone programmer with the skills to provide an open source solution, allowing other developers to seamlessly integrate it into their own products.
Open Clip grabs any text marked to copy, places it gingerly into the iPhone’s storage compartment which then acts as a shared space which can be accessed by any other Open Clip compatible software. Simple really!
It is currently supported by a couple of programs including blogging software Wordpress and Twitellator, with more to follow as the source code is released into the public domain. We for one welcome it, anything which makes the iPhone Wordpress app remotely useful is a boon.

The release of the Apple iPhone 3G on prepay on September 16 has put box breakers on red alert.
But despite the slumping pound, the UK prepay price will lead box breakers to source stock from abroad.
The device launches on prepay at £349.99 (8GB) and £399.99 (16GB). Many box breakers were expecting a lower price and are establishing contacts overseas.
One breaker, who claims to have unlocked more than 5,000 iPhones, said: "It will be a massive target for box breakers. I have a list of nearly 100 people worldwide who have asked me to get one, and I expect that to grow."
Another said: "I have set up contacts abroad to get cheaper stock. Around 20 dealers are interested, and I expect that to increase."
LG KT610 Cellphone Offers GPS, HSDPA, QWERTY Keypad
Sony Ericsson has the tongues wagging over at the Mobile World Congress, LG has quietly loosed its LG-KT610 without any photos. We know it's a 2.4-inch QVGA flip with QWERTY based on Symbian v9.2 and S60 3rd edition feature pack 1. That's a damn good start before adding 3.6Mbps HSDPA and GPS navigation.
LG are beating the cellphone-gasm that will be the Mobile World Congress 2008 by releasing their KT610 model ahead of the game. There are no images of the handset yet, but features that have been confirmed include a candybar design, GPS, HSDPA (3.6Mbps) and a 2.4-inch VGA flip screen, concealing a QWERTY keypad.
The LG-KT610 is a GPS-enabled, candy bar mobile phone with a "unique" 2.4-inch VGA flip screen holding a PC-like QWERTY keypad.Based on Symbian OS v9.2 and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, the KT610's users can "take full advantage of a rich suite of multimedia features and applications" according to the limited info available from the Korean company.
The KT610 offers HSDPA connectivity at 3.6Mbps and GPS navigation capabilities, there's also push email functionality as well as "working" and "socialising" features.
Interestingly, the KT610 runs on Symbian OS v9.2 and S60 3rd Edition Feature pack 1 -- the same operating system as many Nokia smart phones. The advantage of running Symbian on the KT610, as you'll already know if you've got a Nokia phone running it, is you can install gallons of cool third-party apps.
Combine all of that with HSDPA (3.5G) that lets you download data at up to 3.6Mbps (theoretically, at least) and you've got yourself a very slick device indeed. But having played with it for a little bit at the LG stand at the Mobile World Congress, we're not completely won over.

Problem : It doesn't have WiFi, and the KT610 lacks GPS, the superb 800 pixel wide display on the E90 and also comes with a very basic 2 megapixel camera. On the other hand, this 109 x 54 x 17mm device is less than half the weight of the brick-like E90 and is little bigger than a standard business phone.
There's something about the dual keypad and small screen that reminds us a little too much of the Samsung F300 and we weren't massive fans of that phone. If you're going to have two screens, don't make one of them really small. Click onwards for more pics of the KT610.
SAMSUNG SGH-G800 is released.SAMSUNG SGH-G800 powerful shooter has a lot in common with its Nokia rival. For more than a months, an eternity in the gadget world, the Nokia N95 enjoyed the distinction of being one of the only 5-megapixel camera phones on the market. However, considering that change is the only constant with cell phones, it wasn't surprising when Samsung released a high-resolution camera handset.
Inside a relatively boxy design is a media-centric feature set that includes: a music and video player, an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth, expandable memory and support for 3.5G HSDPA networks. On the whole it lived up to our expectations. However, the disappointing Web browser, dim camera flash, and lack of Wi-Fi ultimately put it behind the N95. The price of this exclusive phone is only $550.
Design:
The G800 is definitely not among the smallest phones on the market. With large weight it is also almost as heavy, which combined with the chromed frame makes it feel as a nice high-end phone instead of a plastic toy. It also helps that the lens-cover and a detail on the battery cover are made of brushed aluminum. Positioning the G800 not only as high-tech camera phone but also as high-end device. Samsung has made it with untypical for the brand design. Instead of curved forms everything is rectangular with just slightly rounded corners. The used colors are the classical shining metallic silver and black the G800 looks very classy.
Features
The SGH-G800's phone book holds 1,000 contacts with room in each entry for seven phone numbers, five phone numbers, two e-mail addresses, two URLS, a nickname, a birthday, a company name and job title, two street addresses and notes.
You can save callers to groups and you can pair them with a photo and one of 21 polyphonic ring tones. Other basics include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a calendar, a world clock, a calculator, a currency and unit converter, a timer, a stopwatch, a notepad, a task list and an alarm clock. Higher-maintenance users can take advantage of the speakerphone, Stereo Blue tooth, e-mail, PC syncing, USB 2.0 mass storage, and a voice recorder.
On resolution you can opt for 2560 x 1920 (5M) down to 640 x 480 pixels while you can also choose whether you want to choose single shot, multi-shot, mosaic shot, frame shot or panorama.
Here you have two resolution choices 320 x 240 and 176 x 144 disappointingly missing out on 640 x 480 or even higher resolutions. You do still however get control over white balance, exposure and sound.

AT&T Inc. has launched the company's integrated suite of U-verse services in Wichita, a frontal attack on its cable competitors.
The company on Monday made its U-verse TV service commercially available to 5,000 homes in San Antonio.
U-verse, which includes television, high-speed Internet and telephone services, is highlighted by the nation's only Internet-based television service.
Until this week, AT&T's TV service was available to only a handful of consumers in that city, the first of many on the list of U-verse prospects. AT&T expects to offer the service to a total of 15 to 20 markets by the end of the year. The company has said it plans to spend $4.6 billion through 2008 to bring television and high-speed Internet services to almost 19 million homes.
At least initially, AT&T's service, which is based on Internet Protocol technology, will be very similar to what is already offered by cable companies. The starting price for packages is $69 a month and goes up to $124, depending on Internet speeds and whether the customer opts for premium-channel packages.
It's available in pockets of the greater Wichita area where fiber-optic cable has already been placed, said Kris Ryan, AT&T's general manager for Kansas and Missouri.
AT&T is offering three months of free U-Verse service to customers as part of its promotional push. It's also marking down its installation fee to $20 from $95.
This offering is on par with those of its cable rivals. But AT&T claims that it offers customers more for their money, including fast channel changing, video-on-demand, three set-top boxes, a digital video recorder, a picture-in-picture feature that allows viewers to surf channels without switching channels and an interactive program guide.
That network will continue to expand into areas where AT&T is the primary telephone service provider, Ryan said.
"In the last 10 years, things have changed. Cable is selling telephone service... and it's not perfect. Telephone is selling cable service, and it's not perfect. Both are into new areas, and they're learning and fixing things as they go."
"I've generally heard good things about U-verse," he said. "Thing is, we're in the first inning of a nine-inning game.
Chelsey Ilten, an AT&T spokeswoman, said in an e-mail that the company intends a problem-free rollout in Wichita.
The bugs are the price consumers pay today as the industry evolves into a "customer-friendly market," Kagan said, with more options and lower prices.
"Our customers expect the very best, and we work each and every day to make sure we're meeting and exceeding their expectations, and that includes a great experience on day one of our launch in Wichita," she said.
"The early (subscribers) should be ready for things that don't work," he said. "It will get better."
AT&T launches TV service on new phones, rivaling Verizon NEW YORK - AT&T Inc. is launching its new video service for cell phones Sunday on two phones, and will charge $15 per month for 10 channels. AT&T Mobile TV is almost identical to Verizon Wireless' V Cast Mobile TV, and is operated by the same company, Qualcomm Inc. AT&T will have two exclusive channels on the service, it said Thursday.
AT&T already has a mobile video service called CV, which is based on different technology. It works like Internet video, providing short clips on demand.
Qualcomm's MediaFLO service is more like regular TV broadcasts, constantly streaming shows on airwaves that run alongside regular cell-phone spectrum. Judging by V Cast Mobile TV, which is available on four phones, the quality is much higher than on-demand cell-phone clips.
The service will launch in 58 markets including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Seattle. There will even be parental control features offered, to restrict access to content that would be inappropriate for younger viewers.
