The design, which is quite a departure for Nokia, works very nicely. The device looks different from anything else on the market, with its tapered, sawn-off ends. In a way, partly due to its thickness proportionate to its other dimensions, it looks very slightly like an iPhone in a trendy case. It sits well in the hand. The screen (on which I saw little more than a clock) looks fine — I'm certainly glad to see Nokia move towards credible devices with capacitive touchscreens.

LG has really done an excellent job with the Pop. It's a great handset to use if you don't want to spend big on a mobile phone. The slow internet connectivity is a bit of a bind given that the software is there ready and waiting to help you access everything you need, but perhaps that's not really the aim of this phone. Go and pay for a black label handset or an Arena if you want that kind of thing.
At under £100, the GD510 Pop really is a bargain. What it might lack in power it certainly makes up for in style, usability and pure unbeatable value. You can feel like you've got something special in your pocket for a very small outlay. The only criticism you'd have to level at it given the cost is the missing 3.5mm jack. When will these people learn?
At just £99.95, the LG Pop is an excellent buy. The Korean company heralds it as the world's smallest touchscreen phone but to merit the handset merely for its size is to do it an injustice. Yes it has a 3-inch touchscreen and, yes, the casing around said WQVGA is figure-hugging indeed but there's a quality about the whole phone that is a great testament to the work LG has been putting into its mobiles over the last few years.
The other excellent addition is the native support for Facebook, Twitter and MySpace which is really going to work for the teens and early-20s market where this handset is aimed. The interface with each is good in itself and really only suffers in terms of speed of connection because this phone can only rely on WAP with neither 3G nor Wi-Fi to back it up. Bit of a shame really.
The Nokia 6280 is a 3G slide phone. It's not a smartphone, but has virtually all of the high-end capabilities that normally come with a 3G smartphone, but without the Symbian operating system. The fact that it has a conventional Series 40 operating system makes the user interface fast and responsive.
Music is catered for with a music player for MP3 tracks and Visual Radio. Sound output is in stereo, and a stereo headset is supplied. The phone comes with 74 Mbytes of built-in memory plus an expandable memory card - ideal for storing music and video. The 6280 also has an interesting and novel feature - video ringtones! Connectivity is fully supported, with Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and infra-red, as well as super-fast internet access via EDGE or 3G, supporting download speeds of up to 384 kbps, and upload speeds of 128 kbps. Battery life is very good for a 3G phone. The Nokia 6280 is potentially one of the best 3G phones currently available. However, it is very unreliable and there have been a variety of faults reported - from memory card faults, to shutting down and even total failure. It's a shame, but we really can't recommend the 6280.
As a late adopter of handset designs that stray from a classic candybar-style, Nokia has so far this year shown us two of its slider phones, the small and bulbous 6111, and the bulky 3G 6280. If you're looking for a more inconspicuous slider, you'd be better off with Samsung's D820, which shaves a couple of millimetres off the Nokia's thickness.
With the slider closed on the 6820, Nokia still gives you access to functions such as push-to-talk and camera mode, with dedicated buttons for each on the side. You can also browse the menu with the navigation key to read messages and make calls from your phone book.

The best Windows Mobile phone in business – Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1. From the packaging to the diminutive USB charger to the sleek finish of the device itself, the whole X1 experience is flawless. It is a well-designed smartphone that is very well-engineered. It is no different than Sony VAIO laptops or Bravia TVs, and as such it’s no surprise that it’s expensive: $799. The device is going to be available in the U.S. starting Nov. 28 on Sony’s web site, Sony Style.
This version of the X1 supports the 3G 850 MHz band in the U.S. for high speed data access on AT&T. If you end up buying one of these (only available through US importers right now) make sure you pay attention to which UMTS/HSDPA bands it supports because there is an international version and a North American version. Other specs include a 3 inch 800×480 pixel display, integrated WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 radios, integrated GPS receiver, integrated FM radio, and microSD card slot.
The interesting SE panels make the device unique compared to other Windows Mobile devices and they have some customized panels and a developer kit for you to create your own too. The Facebook panel looks cool and when I meet Joel on Monday I plan to check out the device and see if I am still tempted to fork over US$800 or so for one of my own.
There is also a full QWERTY keyboard that is under the display and experiences I have read state the HTC Fuze one may be better because of the keyboard travel and feedback. I like that SE uses a standard 3.5mm headset jack too and that is one aspect I am thinking may become a basic requirement for me shortly. The 3.2 megapixel camera looks pretty good, but the 10 frames per second video capture is weak.
What will surprise you the most is that this phone is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1. Despite the torturous Windows Mobile interface, I found myself liking this device, which shows that with some creativity and lots of imagination, even Windows Mobile can stand up to assaults from Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s ( s rimm) Blackberry and Google’s Android. Of course Windows Mobile means that the phone syncs with Microsoft Exchange over the air. It can read documents, spreadsheets and presentations natively.
T-Mobile recently began offering the newest iPhone competitor, the G1 Android in the U.S. This beauty has a full touch screen, flip open QWERTY keyboard, and trackball. These features alone make the G1 easier to use than the iPhone, but it gets even better.
It comes standard with Google's mobile Chrome Browser. Like the Apple iPhone, an embedded version of Google Maps is included, but unlike the iPhone, Google Maps Street view is also included and even cooler, it automatically syncs with the G1's built in compass to generate a directional view by simply turning the G1 in the desired direction; but it still gets better.
ShopSavy allows the user to compare retail prices to prices available for the same product on the Internet and at local stores. No longer is it necessary manually look-up the ISBN of a book found at a chain book store to determine if it is available at a reduced price on-line or at another local store. Now one only needs to photograph the bar code with the built in camera and the G1 automatically searches the Internet for the best prices. This works for other products too, by the way.
T-Mobile and Google lifted their embargo Thursday on reviews of the G1, the new HTC-developed iPhone rival that will be the first handset to run Google's new open-source Android operating system when it goes on sale for $179 at T-Mobile shops on Oct. 22.
We've rounded up reviews of the new touch-screen handset from three major media outlets, noting some highlights from each review.
"I have been testing the G1 extensively, in multiple cities and in multiple scenarios," wrote the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg, who believes the device will cater to different users than Apple's iPhone. "In general, I like it and consider it a worthy competitor to the iPhone." The G1’s biggest differentiator is that it has a physical slide-open keyboard, which proved "only fair." Keys are too flat, hard to see in bright sunlight, and somewhat obstructed by bulge in the body of the G1 on the right side.
More flexibility in organizing your desktop than on the iPhone. It's easier to place a phone call on the G1 than on the iPhone. You can just start typing a number randomly from the home screen. There's also a virtual phone keyboard so you don't have to use the physical one.
T-Mobile allows you to unlock the G1 after 90 days and use it on another carrier's network if you pay their substantial early termination fee. Battery is about the same as the iPhone for mixed use and must be recharged just about every night.
One of the G1's downsides is that it's "a chunky brick of a device," Mossberg says. "While it’s a bit narrower than the iPhone and feels OK in the hand, it’s almost 20% heavier and nearly 30% thicker. It also has a smaller screen and doesn’t accept standard stereo headphones." Memory limited to 1GB. Beyond that users need to shell out for a larger memory card. During his tests, the G1 warned Mossberg that it was running out of memory -- something he's never witnessed on the iPhone.
Touch user interface is inferior to the iPhone's. No flick, pinch, or zoom with fingers. Doesn't automatically change orientation. No video player. T-Mobile offers 3G services in only 20 cities compared to AT&T's 320. A promotional video for the HTC-developed T-Mobile G1.
"While it's far from perfect, the G1 powered by Google's Android operating system is packed with plenty of consumer-oriented features that may even make iPhone fans take notice," writes The Associated Press' Rachel Metz. Don't lose the tiny included 1GB microSD card, because you'll lose all your photos and songs and have to buy more storage.
Android Market works well but there are only about three dozen applications and 10 games. "Barcode Scanner" that uses the G1's 3-megapixel camera worked well. The G1's Amazon.com online MP3 store app is easy to browse and offers quick downloads of songs free of copy protection. Video and song playback is hampered by lack of standard headphone jack. Instead, an "uncomfortable earbud headset" is included that plugs into the mini USB port that is also used to charge the phone.
"The first thing I noticed about the T-Mobile G1 Android phone right out of the box is that it pretty much looks like all the other black-slab, touchscreen phones that are trying to emulate Apple’s iPhone," said MSNBC's Suzanne Choney.
In addition to a touch-screen, it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a trackball, which means "more fiddling around [and] remembering which tool to use." Does not have the uniform ease of the iPhone’s finger swipe/touch approach. G1’s QWERTY keys are too small, even for little fingers, presenting some of the same problems people face with the iPhone's keyboard.
Has a 3.2-megapixel camera; the iPhone a 2-megapixel camera. But neither phone can record video.Another sure-to-be-favorite is the Shazam application. This amazing program allows you to "expose" the phone to a digital music source, like a song on the radio and it will use the song's digital "fingerprint" to identify the name of the song and the artist and find it on the Internet for you to purchase as well. Unfortunately, it only works with recorded music so singing to your phone will not work. (And yes, it is also available on the iPhone and Windows Mobile as well).
Other great features include a built in version of You-Tube, a 3 mega-pixel camera, USB headphone jack, an accelerometer, email, IM, text messaging, and everything else you would expect in a modern PDA/Phone. As with all new products, it can't be all good news so expect the occasional glitch at first, but at an entry price of $179 (with two year T-Mobile service commitment), expect the G1 to be a serious rival to Apple's iPhone.
The world economy may be sinking, but for Vodafone Group its U.S. investment is doing quite well.
The world's largest cell phone service provider reported a 35% drop in six-month profit in its mid-fiscal year report that includes several countries scattered around the world.
Vodafone chief executive Vittorio Colao cited the firm's investment in Verizon Wireless as a key bright spot in the financial report, his first since taking over as CEO in July. The key dismal spot, however, was Vodafone's performance in Turkey where the company has named a new top executive to work to turnaround the slumping operation there.
"We will improve operational performance through customer value enhancement and cost efficiency, supported by a Euro 1 billion ($1.56 billion) cost reduction program," Colao said in a statement. "We will pursue growth opportunities in total communications specifically mobile data, enterprise and broadband."
Colao took over the direction of Vodafone as a rump stockholder group demanded Vodafone spin off its ownership in the Verizon unit or pressure Verizon management for more value from the deal. By keeping things as is, Vodafone has shared in the wealth of Verizon Wireless, which enjoyed 12.5% revenue growth to $12.7 billion in its latest report.
Verizon Wireless had sputtered trying to get off the ground in its early days, but it has racked up increasing revenue and profits in recent quarters. With its recent acquisition of Alltel, Verizon Wireless is now the largest wireless service provider in the US.
Colao said Vodafone's previous strategic plan -- formulated in 2006 -- has served the firm well. "However, a number of challenges have evolved," he said in his strategy review this week. "We are clearly entering into a more difficult macro economic environment."
He added that Vodafone's newly-formulated strategy calls for the firm to focus on four key objectives -- "drive operational performance, pursue growth opportunities in total communications, execute in emerging markets and strengthen capital discipline."

The E65 comes in two colour schemes. Mine was brown – Nokia calls it Mocca – and silver. The alternative is red and silver. The brown parts are made of a rubbery substance which makes the E65 easy to grip. I don’t like the leather-look stipple on the back, but that is just a matter of personal taste.It is the only one of the three that looks like a traditional mobile. It is a slider handset, and alongside the capable S60 operating system, it sports a couple of speciality turns for business users.On the software side we have Nokia's Team Suite. This is basically groups management software. You set up groups and can then send e-mails, texts and MMSs to the whole group at once, view Web pages that relate to them and initiate conference calls with them.This is a slider handset. I feel sliders should be very small when closed, and at 105mm tall and 49mm wide, the E65 is not that much smaller than a standard candybar phone. At 15.5mm it’s not that thin either, though its 115g of weight is acceptable.The conference calling bit is also covered by a hardware feature. One of the many buttons on the front of the casing is dedicated to conference calling.
There is no thumbgrip for sliding the phone open, which means that you are forced either to put a thumb mark on the screen or press the edge of the large central select button of the navigation pad. Neither is a perfect solution.A very important aspect of the Nokia E65 is built-in Wi-Fi. This is increasingly common on handsets and smartphones, and in Nokia's E series handsets it is a staple. But this time around there is a twist. You can get the phone to search for networks in the vicinity at regular intervals and report its findings on the main screen. Or you can manually search for networks by selecting an option on the screen. Once you've found a network and are connected, Voice over IP calls and Web browsing are a couple of button presses away.The E65 comes with PC connectivity software and a USB cable, and battery life checked in at around 10 hours of non-stop MP3 music with the screen forced to stay on. It doesn't last as long when the Wi-Fi is active, though.This all adds up to a phone which is pretty nifty, but there are a couple of let-downs.

The Nokia E65 smart phone boasts a beautiful and compact slider design, and features a 2-megapixel camera, e-mail, and productivity apps. It also offers good call quality and solid talk time battery life, and has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
But the E65 doesn't support document editing out of the box, and the lack of a full QWERTY keyboard makes it less than ideal for e-mail. It's occasionally slow, and there's no flash for the camera. The front and side navigation controls are also small and hard to use. There's no support for U.S. 3G networks.
The E65 is brilliantly built and has specifications that blow most other slider phones away. It is unfortunate that the keypad sometimes fails to register key presses. Otherwise, the E65 would have been perfect. All the connectivity options, push email capabilities, and a great browser in a small and slim good looking slider makes the entire package too sweet to resist. This is one phone that I have no hesitation in giving a Highly Recommended rating. If slider phones are your thing, you can't go wrong with the E65. You will just have to get used to its keypad, but this is a minor annoyance when compared to all its positives.
The E61 runs Nokia's S60 3rd Edition on Symbian OS 9.1 and comes with full PIM applications, email client, a superb web browser and applications to read, edit and create MS Office documents. Not only that, it looks really, really good and measures only .55" thin. In the US, the Nokia E61 is offered by CompUSA, Tiger Direct, some independent T-Mobile dealers (such as Skylight Wireless in the Dallas Metroplex area who supplied our review unit) and importers. Importers generally sell it for a truly affordable $350 unlocked with no contract while CompUSA sells it for considerably more. The E61 is a quad band world phone with EDGE and Euro-3G (not compatible with US 3G). You can use the phone with any GSM provider, which means Cingular and T-Mobile in the US. Since the E61 is a business phone, it does not have a camera. The E61 is available in several localized versions for different countries and languages. All have full support for English but the QWERTY keyboard on the Middle Eastern one is bilingual with both English and Arabic in the case of our Middle Eastern review unit (which came with both English and Arabic manuals). The Spanish version adds a few non-English characters (this is the one that's generally cheapest and easiest to find on eBay as of this writing). So if you're buying sight unseen, check with the seller to see which version they're selling. Cingular is rumored to release the Nokia E62 later this year, which is the same as the E61 but it deletes WiFi and 3G. Design and Ergonomics : Though very slim, the E61 is wide to accommodate the thumb keyboard and tall to fit the large display above that keyboard. It dwarfs several of the Nokia NSeries S60 phones such as the N80, but fits in nicely with the Palm Treo 700p / 700w, T-Mobile MDA (Cingular 8125), BlackBerry 8700g and other keyboarded smartphones and PDA phones. The phone is finished in silver and the casing is made of metal which makes for a sturdy device. Score one for the E61: none of its direct competitors feature a metal casing. It's thinnest at the keyboard end and gets a bit wider in the display area, with a gentle slope marking the transition.
The power button is located on the upper right face and it's so small that you'll likely never accidentally press it. The blue LED that indicates new email is at the upper left. Unlike Nseries Nokia phones, there is no LED that flashes when the phone is asleep. As you'd expect, the earpiece is dead center above the display while the loudspeaker (for speakerphone, ringers and alarms) is on the phone's left edge. The IR port is located somewhat oddly on the bottom edge next to the Pop-Port connector and the volume up/down and voice recorder keys are located up on the upper left side. The volume controls fall perfectly under your index finger when holding the phone to the ear with the right hand. The voice recorder button, though not raised, is too easily pressed when pulling the phone out of a pocket.
Features : It's pretty clear which route Nokia's designers chose to take when deciding which technologies to implement on the E61. It basically chucked them all in. The end result is a phone with (deep breath) support for GSM 850/900/1800/1900, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, Infrared, VoIP, Push To Talk, and Mini SD storage cards. On the software side, you can add to that list support for Symbian OS 9.1 compatible applications, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents, as well as Zip files and PDF files via Adobe reader. The E61's screen can be sent out to compatible projectors via the E61's screen export package, making it a potential replacement for some ultraportable notebooks, depending on your usage patterns. Naturally as a competitor in the BlackBerry space, the E61 has full support for POP3, IMAP, SMTP and Microsoft Exchange Server email. In an odd, and decidedly non-corporate way, it also supports instant messaging clients from Yahoo and AOL, MP3 and AAC music playback and RealPlayer video support. Just don't let the IT department know about those features and you should be fine.
One feature that's normally de rigeur with 3G phones that the E61 omits is any kind of camera, so if your business life also includes the odd video call, this isn't the phone for you. The flipside of this is presumably that it'll be easier to convince your IT department to buy one if it doesn't look like a consumer phone in any way whatsoever.
Performance : Where the E61 impressed us the most was in the breadth of its scope, especially given the inbuilt support for WiFi. The inclusion of WiFi makes it a true option for work within the office and outside of it, as it's capable of using whatever data connection is to hand for incoming messages and other data transmissions. The mobile carriers may not be happy with this -- data rates over 3G and GPRS are typically very high -- but it's a good argument in the E61's favour that you'll be able to use wireless services for data transmission when you're in a compatible hotspot or in the office. The same also holds true for voice calls, where you can use VoIP clients for calling purposes. Naturally, it's a good idea to make sure you are connected properly to your WiFi connection before initiating a VoIP call, otherwise you'll find your VoIP savings evaporate when your carrier charges you data rates for your call.
The one caveat we'd attach to the E61 is that a lot of its menu choices aren't as clear as they could otherwise be, and you'll sometimes find yourself trekking through multiple screens to achieve a desired result. As an example, you can scan for nearby wireless access points in the phone's connection manager, but only connect to insecure points that way -- if you need to classify wireless security settings for an access point, that's in an entirely different menu and sub-menu structure.
High style, a QWERTY keyboard, WiFi and durability have finally converged, thanks to the Nokia E61. The phone is stunning looking and happily it works just as well as it looks. It beats the BlackBerry on expansion, style, durability and multimedia features, though its keyboard isn't quite as good. While Palm OS is getting long in the tooth, Symbian OS 9 and S60 3rd Edition are much fresher and more powerful (faster networking, multitasking and more). And it competes strongly against Windows Mobile devices, being more responsive and perhaps a bit more secure.
LG KT610 Cellphone Offers GPS, HSDPA, QWERTY Keypad
Sony Ericsson has the tongues wagging over at the Mobile World Congress, LG has quietly loosed its LG-KT610 without any photos. We know it's a 2.4-inch QVGA flip with QWERTY based on Symbian v9.2 and S60 3rd edition feature pack 1. That's a damn good start before adding 3.6Mbps HSDPA and GPS navigation.
LG are beating the cellphone-gasm that will be the Mobile World Congress 2008 by releasing their KT610 model ahead of the game. There are no images of the handset yet, but features that have been confirmed include a candybar design, GPS, HSDPA (3.6Mbps) and a 2.4-inch VGA flip screen, concealing a QWERTY keypad.
The LG-KT610 is a GPS-enabled, candy bar mobile phone with a "unique" 2.4-inch VGA flip screen holding a PC-like QWERTY keypad.Based on Symbian OS v9.2 and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, the KT610's users can "take full advantage of a rich suite of multimedia features and applications" according to the limited info available from the Korean company.
The KT610 offers HSDPA connectivity at 3.6Mbps and GPS navigation capabilities, there's also push email functionality as well as "working" and "socialising" features.
Interestingly, the KT610 runs on Symbian OS v9.2 and S60 3rd Edition Feature pack 1 -- the same operating system as many Nokia smart phones. The advantage of running Symbian on the KT610, as you'll already know if you've got a Nokia phone running it, is you can install gallons of cool third-party apps.
Combine all of that with HSDPA (3.5G) that lets you download data at up to 3.6Mbps (theoretically, at least) and you've got yourself a very slick device indeed. But having played with it for a little bit at the LG stand at the Mobile World Congress, we're not completely won over.

Problem : It doesn't have WiFi, and the KT610 lacks GPS, the superb 800 pixel wide display on the E90 and also comes with a very basic 2 megapixel camera. On the other hand, this 109 x 54 x 17mm device is less than half the weight of the brick-like E90 and is little bigger than a standard business phone.
There's something about the dual keypad and small screen that reminds us a little too much of the Samsung F300 and we weren't massive fans of that phone. If you're going to have two screens, don't make one of them really small. Click onwards for more pics of the KT610.
BBC iPlayer to be preloaded to Nokia N96 The BBC and Nokia have announced a partnership that will see BBC iPlayer supported on the Nokia N96, released in the UK on October 1st.
Nokia N96 users will be the first mobile users with the ability to both download and stream programmes from the iPlayer platform. A purpose built BBC iPlayer widget that will be both 3G and wireless compatible will be available to download via bbc.co.uk/mobile and will be pre-loaded on some handsets, allowing content to be viewed on demand. The iPlayer application will be preloaded on the N96 due for release on October 1 and will be available on other Nokia handsets free by downloading the application via www.bbc.co.uk/mobile. It allows customers to download and stream television shows that have been aired. Shows available include East Enders, Dragon’s Den as well as radio programmes.
Nokia managing director Simon Ainslie said: “The Nokia N96 is going to provide a gateway to quality viewing on the move and will raise the bar for mobile screen and audio entertainment.
"The enormous success of iPlayer has demonstrated the desire audiences have for accessing programmes at a time and a place that suits them.
"Nokia is proud to be working with the BBC to continue to lead this revolution."

SAMSUNG SGH-G800 is released.SAMSUNG SGH-G800 powerful shooter has a lot in common with its Nokia rival. For more than a months, an eternity in the gadget world, the Nokia N95 enjoyed the distinction of being one of the only 5-megapixel camera phones on the market. However, considering that change is the only constant with cell phones, it wasn't surprising when Samsung released a high-resolution camera handset.
Inside a relatively boxy design is a media-centric feature set that includes: a music and video player, an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth, expandable memory and support for 3.5G HSDPA networks. On the whole it lived up to our expectations. However, the disappointing Web browser, dim camera flash, and lack of Wi-Fi ultimately put it behind the N95. The price of this exclusive phone is only $550.
Design:
The G800 is definitely not among the smallest phones on the market. With large weight it is also almost as heavy, which combined with the chromed frame makes it feel as a nice high-end phone instead of a plastic toy. It also helps that the lens-cover and a detail on the battery cover are made of brushed aluminum. Positioning the G800 not only as high-tech camera phone but also as high-end device. Samsung has made it with untypical for the brand design. Instead of curved forms everything is rectangular with just slightly rounded corners. The used colors are the classical shining metallic silver and black the G800 looks very classy.

The SGH-G800's phone book holds 1,000 contacts with room in each entry for seven phone numbers, five phone numbers, two e-mail addresses, two URLS, a nickname, a birthday, a company name and job title, two street addresses and notes.
You can save callers to groups and you can pair them with a photo and one of 21 polyphonic ring tones. Other basics include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a calendar, a world clock, a calculator, a currency and unit converter, a timer, a stopwatch, a notepad, a task list and an alarm clock. Higher-maintenance users can take advantage of the speakerphone, Stereo Blue tooth, e-mail, PC syncing, USB 2.0 mass storage, and a voice recorder.
On resolution you can opt for 2560 x 1920 (5M) down to 640 x 480 pixels while you can also choose whether you want to choose single shot, multi-shot, mosaic shot, frame shot or panorama.
Here you have two resolution choices 320 x 240 and 176 x 144 disappointingly missing out on 640 x 480 or even higher resolutions. You do still however get control over white balance, exposure and sound.
