Mobile DTV Looms Large in 2009

The repurposing of broadcast television's most valued commodity—its program content—to new mobile devices such as smart phones, laptops, standalone video players and perhaps most significantly, vehicles of all shapes and sizes, could become the "next big thing" for both broadcasters and consumers by the end of this new year.

Setting off a chain of events already well underway was the November elevation of what is being branded "ATSC Mobile TV" to the status of a Candidate Standard. This next-to-final step is the end-result of years of industry consideration and would create a mobile television system fed strictly off local broadcasters' spectrum that would not have been possible in the analog era.

DO NO HARM

The near-final scheme now undergoing final testing (and minor tweaking) permits the deployment of a technically efficient, robust mobile stream (usually a simulcast) to be transmitted from within a station's FCC-allotted DTV spectrum without causing interference to a licensee's other DTV services running concurrently, such as HD channels and/or SD multicasting.

"During the Candidate Standard stage we hope to get feedback from companies who are implementing the system," said ATSC President Mark Richer. "We do not expect to receive many suggestions to make major substantive changes in the specifications. However, given the length and complexity of the documents, it is likely we will receive many comments suggesting editorial changes in order to clarify the text."

This block diagram illustrates the path the ATSC signal takes to get to mobile devices.
Achieving Candidate Standard status also typically sends a clear message to all parties that the time to commence development of compatible devices and services can now get underway. And then it will be largely up to CE makers to devise as many different types of products using the ATSC Mobile TV standard as technology, creativity, capital, and the current economy will permit. [Supporters of the Candidate Standard are holding a special demonstration—sponsored by Harris, LG and Samsung—at a briefing at CES2009 in Las Vegas this week.]

The Open Mobile Video Coalition, a consortium of two dozen major broadcast groups pushing the ATSC standard, said between now and early summer it has plans for extensive interoperability testing and trials in various markets.

"ATSC Mobile DTV is built around a highly robust transmission system that is carried in digital broadcast channels without any adverse impact on legacy receiving equipment," Schelle said. "Because mobile DTV is built on top of the existing digital broadcast television system, it's anticipated that the cost to broadcasters will be relatively small."

THE DIFFERENTIATOR

Timing may be crucial for any successful launch of the ATSC spec because the term "mobile TV" will not be a new one for many consumers. There are other forms of mobile video (most of it not live) currently in the market—notably from MobiTV, iTunes, MediaFLO, and all those hundreds of Web sites which offer video podcasts, often directly from the big four broadcast networks.

OMVC's Schelle also emphasizes that because the Candidate Standard is a point-to-multi-point broadcast service, "It is not bandwidth-constrained like other current real-time mobile TV services. That means better quality for consumers [which] will be noticeable in terms of signal availability, as well as better picture quality and resolution." Also, ATSC's Richer adds, "The physical [RF] layer is unique because it must be backwards-compatible with the existing ATSC DTV system and provide high performance in a broadcast environment."

As an example, Adrick points to the night Barack Obama was elected president. "They had a quarter-of-a-million people or more in Grant Park in Chicago, yes?" Adrick said. "Let's say 100,000 of those people had mobile TV devices using the new broadcast standard [to watch Obama live]. No problem. But if those same people were using cellular-based devices for their mobile TV, you'd get about 40 or 50 devices on a cell and it would simply crash. Not so with a single point-to multi-point mobile system."

VoIP Calls: Cheapest Calls to Any Mobile or Landline

http://www.geckoandfly.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/gizmo5_voip_call_mobile_chat_free_internet.jpg
VoIP is a technology that converts voice into data that can be transmitted via the Internet using the Internet protocol and at the receiving end, the data is converted back to voice. This allows the users to experience voice conversation with their contacts over the Internet.

This mode of communication is very beneficial for people who make ISD phone calls often. People who make ISD calls pay hefty phone bills. It is because they have to pay for every calling minute. Longer the duration of the call, the higher the charge the callers have to pay.

As such, one has to look for the utilisation of the VoIP technology and the associated free services that the service providers offer. People who are interested in making free VoIP calls should make for the Internet to find out the websites that deals in such free services. It is very easy to find such websites that provide such free services. The simplicity associated with the utilisation of this service is established with the rising use of this service, on a world wide basis. Making free calls is, therefore, very frequent and the future of communication is bright for people who want to stay in touch with their loved ones or professional contacts.

Today, you would also find services that may offer free mobile calls but when their services are compared with that of the VoIP, you will discover that VoIP does make a difference.

Any body can decide whether a particular service is favourable for him. One's decision can be firmed up only after having an understanding the service's working or performance and at what price. An experience of the service in question shall always help in making such decisions.

It has been found that VoIP calls have brought about a lot of advantages associated with communication. If a user is in a mood to compare its performance, he can just go for VoIP broadband services. The difference one can discover is that VoIP uses high speed Internet or broadband instead of a traditional landline connection.

Just have a look at the working of the VoIP. Here, the Internet is connected to a phone or receiver. It can be done in two ways, from either a service provider or a particular code given to the user by allowing the user to download the software for VoIP.

How to make a mobile

What you'll need:
Wire coat hanger, construction paper, scissors, hole punch, string or yarn for a hanging mobile. For younger children, you might make a stationary mobile or stabile.

Background:
Mobiles are balance in motion. This activity may challenge adults and children.

Setting up:
Explain to children that mobiles can hang from the ceiling or stand where their parts can move. Children choose whether to make a mobile or stabile, and what they would like on it (perhaps construction paper shapes, dried leaves or family pictures).

What to do:
To make a hanging mobile, children cut or tear paper shapes or choose other objects. Punch one hole near an edge of each shape. Cut string or yarn into different lengths, and tie to the object first. Hang up the coat hanger. Tie items on the hanger one at a time, deciding how to shift their weight until the mobile is balanced.

For a stabile, use a ball of clay or piece of thick foam as a base. Poke pipe cleaners into the base. Cut paper shapes. Attach paper shapes to the pipe cleaners.

The good

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl is the first BlackBerry to offer a 1.3-megapixel camera, music and video playback, expandable memory, and a mapping application. The supersleek phone also continues to offer superior push e-mail capabilities, EDGE support, and Bluetooth....

The badThe bad

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl's microSD slot is inconveniently located behind the battery, and call quality was subpar in our tests. The phone's camera doesn't record video, and we wish there were external controls for the music player and integrated Wi-Fi.

The Cellular HTC PPC6800

http://www.feelphones.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/alltel-ppc6800.jpg
This update to HTC's 6700 PDA phone is thinner and lighter, while dropping the external antenna and upgrading to Windows Mobile 6, an assisted-slide keyboard, stereo Bluetooth, and a 2 megapixel camera. The EVDO data is also upgradeable to the faster Rev. A standard. Other features remain similar including Wi-Fi, memory card slot, and touch screen.

The HTC PPC6800 cell phone provided by U. S. Cellular is an advanced and efficient device. Currently, the PPC6800 has a ROM version of 2.17.557.0 and a ROM date of 11/20/07. The Radio version is 1.64.00. The PRL version is 15052 with the PRI version of 1.31_027. So far, U. S. Cellular has not provided an update for the HTC PPC6800. Is there any information on the status of an update for the cell phone? This comes to the point of an inquiry because there are features that the HTC PPC6800 has but they cannot be used due to the lack of updates for the cell phone. These features could include improved battery life, GPS, improved Bluetooth, EV-DO Rev. A update, etc.

i-mate - JAMA 101 review

http://www.mobiletopsoft.com/images/news/i-mate_jama_101.jpg

Manufacturer i-mate is a well established builder of Windows Mobile devices available to anyone who wants them without a contract. The upside of this arrangement is that you can use them with any SIM. The downside is that without an operator subsidy they are relatively expensive.

The JAMA 101 is a case in point. At over £200 you are parting with a lot of money, so you need to be sure that you are getting a device that works well now and is future-proofed as much as possible.

On the latter front, the JAMA 101 has problems. There is Bluetooth but no Wi-Fi, which might not bother you today, but could do tomorrow, or next month, or next year. Without Wi-Fi you can't hop onto a network for some quick Web browsing, e-mail synchronising or file sharing. The more Wi-Fi there is around you, the more you may regret not having it on your PDA.

Hot on the heels of the x150 reviews we featured a few weeks ago we’ve had a hands on with the consumer equivalent the i-mate JAMA 101 the JAMA range is i-mates first foray into the consumer marketplace after the dissolution of their relationship with HTC so it’s quite key to their brand image, we’re going to look at how the JAMA measures up. The 101 is an upgraded version specs wise and styling wise over the original JAMA.

I-mates HTC devices have stood them in good stead, the JAMA looks just like a mini version of i-mates HTC JAMin which was a massive favourite of mine. The JAMA certainly turned heads the styling and size are fantastic, the screen is a little smaller than is ideal but you’re getting a really compact PDA here with Windows Mobile 6 professional on board.

Having some gorgeous thing :
  • i-mate JAMA 101
  • Mains charger
  • Battery
  • USB Sync/charge cable
  • User guide
  • Screen protector
  • Wired stereo headset
  • Spare stylus
  • Application CD rom
  • i-mate JAMA 101 full specification:

  • Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 6 Professional
  • Samsung 300 MHz processor
  • 128Mbytes ROM 64 Mbytes RAM
  • 2.4" 240 x 320 touch screen
  • GSM/GPRS (class 10) Tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz
  • 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM
  • Micro-SD card slot Memory Expansion (up to 2GB)
  • Nominal Talk time 4 hours, up to 150 Hours Standby
  • 2.0 Mega Pixel-Effect camera with 5x digital zoom
  • Bluetooth® v1.2
  • USB1.1

  • No sign of life: the JAMA has no visual indication that it's on, no LEDs no lightsn no nothing. After my experiences with the ATOM this was disconcerting, I like a flashing LED at least to let me know the device is still alive.
  • Battery life: I got a day's use of the JAMA but that was it, I'd hope for a bit better, I know it's small but you need more juice than this
  • No WiFi, 3G and only USB 1.1: I suppose this is down to the size of the JAMA but I can't help feeling it's a retrograde step.

  • Flaky software: the JAMA hung far too often and refused to come back from the dead after I cleared the memory of my data prior to sending the JAMA back.
  • Erratic Bluetooth: possibly another symptom pf the same problem however the JAMA's Bluetooth just kept shutting down and a reboot was necessary to get it back sometimes.
  • The JAMA was a real pleaser initially and the styling certainly gained a positive reaction, however the lack of 3G and WiFi were a bit of a disappointment and with continued use the lack of visual notification and the fiddly on screen keyboards were a bit of pain. I wouldn’t replace my current devices with the JAMA at the moment but with an update to iron out the stability issues the JAMA could be a real winner.

    New AT&T BlackJack II

    AT&T BlackJack II
    http://www.gadgetreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/samsung-blackjack2.jpg
The original BlackJack was as close to the "ideal" of what I want in a Windows Mobile phone than I've ever come. Sure it didn't have GPS, WiFi, or decent battery life (with the standard battery), but it was attractive, thin, snappy in terms of performance, and easy to use from a form factor perspective. I was elated when I heard tell that AT&T would be issuing a successor to the BlackJack, dubbed (fittingly) the BlackJack II. I have high hopes for this device, and what is to follow is a thorough evaluation of the successor to my favorite device yet. Read on to see if it's a worthy successor!

    WHAT'S HOT
For comparative purposes, I'll show the specs of the original BlackJack (in parentheses) following each spec for the BlackJack II. The device packs a 260Mhz (220MHz) processor, with 256MB (128MB) ROM, and 128MB (64 MB) RAM. It has a 2.4" (2.3") landscape QVGA screen, with a front rotary scroll wheel (side scroll wheel) and a slot for a microSD card (ditto). It also has Bluetooth 2.0 (ditto) and has a SiRF Star III GPS receiver built in (no GPS).

Sleeker, smarter, and even simpler to use than its predecessor, the BlackJack II by Samsung is the only mobile device you’ll ever need. Available in four colors—black, wine red, pink, and blue—the BlackJack II features Windows Mobile 6.1, built-in GPS support, a 2.4-inch display, a full QWERTY keyboard, a front jog wheel for easier scrolling, world roaming capability with tri-band HSDPA, and a 2.0-megapixel camera.

    Setup of Mobile Broadband

How to Choose and Setup your Mobile Broadband

In today’s world, it seems almost impossible to get through the day without accessing the Internet.Especially if you are on tour or have to leave your office or home for some weeks then finding access points can be difficult. So for this reason, you must be interested in obtaining a mobile broadband service. The most obvious advantage to mobile broadband is the fact that it is quite convenient to use and you can connect to the Internet from any location.Various companies have now introduced solution for this and mobile internet is available through USB modems, dongles and mobile phones.

How to Choose the Right Ones

As for now, many companies have entered this area and it becomes a tough time for consumers to choose between right services for there needs.A quick tour of Broadband-Expert.co.uk helps us to choose between a variety of models and designs from their unique broadband deals. These people research, test and compare broadband and mobile broadband packages to help consumers find the best broadband packages for their needs. Here they have listed all the providers(3 Mobile,Vodafone,T-Mobile,Orange and more) along with their packages, speed, download limit, monthly price, setup fee and package ratings.Free laptops are also available from them as part of the deal.

Remove the SIM card holder from the side of the modem. Slide the SIM card in as shown and make sure it’s in place.

    Setting Up Mobile Broadband

usb modem sim card usb modem usb plug

Put the SIM card holder back into the side of the modem.Plug the single end of the data cable into the modem as shown above. The software will start automatically from the USB modem and you are all set.

Broadband-Expert makes it very easy for new users to quickly learn about the technology, compare the offers of all the major carriers and choose a device and plan right for them. They also have an active forum where people discuss about different broadband service and posts their opinion about them. However while reviewing their site I found out the lack of video reviews and tutorials which could have given users an added advantage. But one thing what I really enjoyed was the their neat way of comparing and rating all the service providers without confusing the users.

    Airtel free gprs

Airtel free gprs with teashark browser to use free airtel gprs

    http://lh4.ggpht.com/renjithsmenon/SAEazXrFU6I/AAAAAAAAAzY/Hmcm2RmLs8o/AIRTEL%20FREE%20GPRS%5B3%5D.jpg
Everyone would love to access free airtel gprs and getting free airtel gprs is now made easy by teashark, a mobile internet browser which is also available as a free download just like opera mini. Whats most amazing is the fact that the working of this browser which enables it to provide free airtel gprs access without even changing any of the airtel gprs settings is still unknown.

To get this gem working, you first need to download this. The file can be easily downloaded from the following link: http://www.teashark.com/download.html. The downloaded file is an executable jar file which can be easily installed on any java enabled phone. The next thing you need to do to take you one step closer to free airtel gprs on your mobile phone is selecting the access point as airtel live from the teashark mobile browser. Once you are done with the above settings you are now ready to enjoy free access to airtel gprs.

In this paragraph I will try to inform you about all the installation hurdles which may come in your way to free airtel gprs on your mobile phone. The first and the foremost thing you need to take care of is to ensure that you have got airtel live activated on your phone for which you have to call the customer care and it is free of cost. Only then you should select airtel live as the access point. Another problem which you may encounter is that your phone may show white screen, if it happens then restart your phone. If it continues to happen you should better reinstall teashark and click on the yes option in case your phone asks you to clear previous data or overwrite previous data.

If you guys cannot get teashark working then the other way around to get free airtel gprs access is by downloading teashark from this link: http://mosh.nokia.mobi/content/422B3629768A1249E040050A453005BC. I guess this is another version of teashark which gets installed without any problem and you can access free airtel gprs.

Teashark however allows you to browse free but it does not allow free downloads. You will be charged usually for the downloads as the downloads are done through the phone’s browser and not through teashark. In some cases getting it to work may take upto 2 days and more than 50 tries. Moral of the story is getting the free airtel gprs on your phone is not easy infact getting anything free is not easy at all, so don’t lose heart and keep trying until you succeed.
