Subsidy unlocking and de-branding are not the same. If you have had your account with AT&T / Cingular for more than 90 days, you can call customer service and request the subsidy unlock code for free. And no, you don't need some special program or cable to unlock. There is no unlock code "in" your phone. The "code" is actually nothing more than a mathematical equation that is programmed into the rom of every cell phone. It converts your IMEI to a "code". It is not stored "in" your phone. When you insert an "invalid" smart chip, the phone loads a snippet of code from the ROM. It runs an equation on the phones IMEI and compares it to an inserted solution (your code). No, you can not flash over this code, no you can not modify this code, no you cannot "hack" this code. Just wait 90 days, or find a service online. There are several that will provide this service for a minimal fee (around $20.00 USD). If you purchased a pre-paid phone, if it is not already unlocked, just call customer service, they will give you the unlock code immediately. Just make sure you request the SUBSIDY unlock code, not the PUK unlock code. It will be e-mailed to you within 24 - 72 hours. If they give you a code immediately, it is probably the PUK unlock code. Do not try this code. You only get three attempts before your phone is permanently locked to Cingular / AT&T. Tell the representative that you need the subsidy unlock code, not the PUK if this happens. By the way, Centinneal wireless does not lock their phones. All wireless / cellular service providers in the United States will give you your "unlock code" after you have kept your account active and in good standing for 90 days. They must provide you with an unlock code, if requested, if you purchase a "list price" phone, or a pre-paid phone.
For those still interested in de-branding. You don't need the firmware files, you need the main files and a program called FAR. If you are afraid of a console type appearance, this program is not for you. FAR allows you to "open" your phone in a window that is similar to M$ Windowz cmd program, however, it supports mouse functions. Using FAR, you can copy your current firmware to a fixed disk or removable medium (F5) (i.e. your hard drive or flash drive w/e.). Then search those folders for *.xml. One will be named either customize.xml, default.xml, or custom.xml. Open this file in notepad. Search for the term ringtone-restriction. Delete this snipet of code. I would also recommend re-enabling flash animation menu's. Find the line
I would also recommend deleting Cingular's stuff from the phone before copying it back to the phone. i.e. Those annoying factory ringtones, pictures, videos and java apps that are locked. Or change the code that locks them. All the code is self-explanatory, just read through the xml file. You can also re-enable forwarding of java applications through MMS. It's in one of the msg_ui_sett.xml files, however, make sure they are all the same. There's like 20 of them that your phone will compare. Just search around on your phone for xml files. It's all plain english.
If you get a blinking white screen, try again. If you get a solid white screen, call Cingular / AT&T and tell them your wife / kids / girlfriend whomever disconnected the phone from the computer while your in the process of transferring files to it. They will send you a new one. If it is within 30 days of purchase, take it to the nearest Cingular / AT&T store and exchange for a free one (same reason).
Oh yeah, all these programs, main files, themes, everything will cost you about $0.00 USD. They are all free. Just make sure you FULLY charge your battery before starting this. You can not turn the phone on or charge it until you get both the modified firmware and main files back on the phone. Make sure you exit FAR and disconnect the phone before editing anything, otherwise it will drain your battery while you are searching for those files. Then just reconnect when you are ready to finish the job.
Also, you do not need a custompack or *.fbn (filesystem) with this method. You do, however, need to ensure you get the correct main file. It must be your current main, from AT&T, just search at howardforums for it. Make sure the CID matches as well as the erom color. This process is known to work on CID 52 phones with a RED erom. Download phone xs and it will tell you the erom color, current firmware, everything. Just make sure you acquire matching files, otherwise, you will get a "Configuration Error. Please Contact Your Service Provider." error.

I unlocked my gilfriends phone so she could use her old ATT network (non 3G) and keep her plan. ATT wanted her to switch and pay more. Here's how it worked. I used srisri's "best solution" and called ATT and told them I bought the phone retail, which I did, and I was planning on using it on a different network for business purposes. I then asked for the "subsidy unlock code", gave him my IMEI # from the back of the phone and he gave it to me instantly. (actually on the 3rd call and 2 visits to diff corporate stores) I did not have to wait for an e-mail. I then had to insert the 3G SIM from my phone so it would turn on. From there I followed the following procedure on the phone.
press:
[left] [*] [*] [left]
Choose "Network"
You will be prompted for the unlock code
Enter unlock code
You should get a "Network Unlocked" message if everything went OK.
You might have to turn the phone off, and on again to get it to accept the SIM
Then I reinserted her old SIM and the phone is working perfectly for no additional cost.
(Solution-4)
I have received the unlock code from AT&T, however after following the instruction my phone still not recognizing non-AT&T sim card and asks “Insert sim card”. I have called AT&T … and they do not have any solution. Any idea of what I can do?
