World's No.1 mobile phone panel supplier:
Taiwan-based Wintek Corp. (TAIPEI, Taiwan) replaced South Korea's Samsung SDI as the world's largest supplier of mobile phone displays in the third quarter of 2007 for the first time by contributing 14.2 percent to the world's total shipments, according to a report released Friday by the display market research and consulting firm DislaySearch.DisplaySearch tallies show that Wintek shipped 47.26 million mobile phone panels in the third quarter of 2007, up 39 percent quarter-on-quarter and 76 percent year-on year. This corporation is now the world's No.1 mobile phone panel supplier.
The report said Wintek's recent efforts to expand its production line for thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) have significantly boosted the company's TFT-LCD production, with the shipments of TFT-LCD panels for mobile phones as a percentage of the company's total shipments rising seven percentage points quarter-on-quarter to 19 percent for the third quarter.
Meanwhile, shipments by Sharp, Epson and TPO accounted for 10.2 percent, 9.5 percent and 7.5 percent, respectively, of the world's total for the third quarter of 2007. Shipments by the five manufacturers together accounted for 53.2 percent of the world's total for the quarter. The report noted that both Sharp and TPO are shifting to low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) TFT-LCD manufacturing process.
It said the world's total shipments for mobile phone displays amounted to 332.8 million for the third quarter of 2007, up 19 percent over the previous quarter to hit a new high for a single quarter. However, owing to an 18-percent drop in the average unit price of mobile phone panels, the value of the shipments declined 8 percent year-on-year to US$2.77 billion for the third quarter of 2007, according to the report.Of the total of 33.9 million TFT-LCD mobile phone panels shipped by Sharp in the third quarter of 2007, 20.7 million were produced using the LTPS technology, according to the report.TPO shipped 15 million LTPS-based TFT-LCD mobile phone panels in the third quarter, making it the world's second-largest manufacturer of the products, the report said.
